The historic tourism landmark that is the Manila Hotel became the first hotel in the Philippines to receive the halal compliance certificate from the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) on 12 March 2010.
Officials from the Department of Tourism (DOT) said that halal certification for the Manila Hotel is just the first step in a determined effort to effectively market the Philippines as a destination for Muslim tourists.
Manila Hotel General Manager Kleon Keekstra said that obtaining halal certification made perfect business sense because "non-Muslim people can eat halal food, but Muslims can't eat ordinary food." With 1.57 billion Muslims worldwide, DOT efforts to encourage halal certification for hotels and restaurants in the Philippines would certainly help boost tourism arrivals from the Middle East and Muslim countries.
