Amb. Julius D. Torres presents credentials to Palestinian president
Philippine Ambassador to Jordan Julius D. Torres presented his letter of credence as non-resident Ambassador to Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on 6 December 2009.
During the ceremony held at the Palestinian Embassy in Amman, Ambassador Torres also presented the letter of recall of his predecessor, Ambassador Jose P. Del Rosario Jr.
After the ceremony, Ambassador Torres and President Abbas engaged in a brief exchange of views on the present state of relations between the Philippines and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA).
President Abbas thanked Ambassador Torres for the good relations between the Philippines and the PNA and expressed the desire for expanded opportunities to exchange views on matters of mutual concern.
President Abbas added that the PNA is keen on re-opening its Embassy in Manila and would appoint a resident ambassador as soon as possible who would have the duty of further strengthening relations between the Philippines and the PNA.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki, who was also present, reiterated the earlier decision of the PNA to send a delegation the Special Non-Aligned Movement Ministerial Meeting (SNAMMM) on Interfaith Dialogue and Cooperation for Peace and Development to be held in Manila. The SNAMMM was postponed to early 2010 in the aftermath of the damage wrought by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng.
Ambassador Torres welcomed the decision of the PNA to open the Palestinian Embassy in Manila and assured both President Abbas and Foreign Minister Al-Maliki that he will inform them of the new date for the SNAMMM once it has been finalized.
